Meet the team
Mrs Urban is the EAL and MFL co-ordinator and supports newly arrived children (in Shooting Stars) as well as other children across the school for whom English is an additional language. Mrs Urban speaks Polish due to it being her mother tongue and can also communicate in Czech and Slovakian.
Miss Lamb has a background as a TEFL teacher. She supports newly arrived children (in Shooting Stars) as well as other children across the school for whom English is not a first language and need help to develop their language skills. She works mainly in KS2. Miss Lamb speaks Spanish as it is her second mother tongue, as well as French fluently and some Italian.
We both run language interventions at all levels to help the children acquire English as quickly as possible and be able to access the National Curriculum with their peers.
We are passionate about different languages and cultures. We think it is very important to celebrate these due to being such a multicultural school! One of our school values is 'Respect' therefore we believe in promoting other languages and accepting our differences.
If you have any queries about your child's English skills, please feel free to speak to either of us and we would be happy to help in any way we can!
All newly arrived children who don't speak English as a first language come to Shooting Stars room in the morning (for Phonics, Literacy and Maths) for a minimum of 6 weeks to learn basic English vocabulary like counting, initial sounds, classroom vocabulary and everyday language. We also focus on teaching these children about the structure of the day and how to behave at school. After lunch, the children go back to their main classrooms, so that they are able to get to know their teacher, their classmates and access other subjects such as Art, P.E, History, etc.
We have found it has been very successful so far and the children have benefited greatly from learning basic English before they integrate into their main class full time. We do our best to make learning as fun as possible and children learn through songs, practical activities and games but we also concentrate on writing.
If you would like to see some examples of work that takes place in our class please check our class page.
Once the Newly arrived children have completed 6 weeks in the Shooting Stars room, they go back to their main class for the whole day but we still support them by giving them (at least) one slot for extra English language interventions a week. In these sessions we work on grammar, building vocabulary, expanding knowledge of culture and spelling amongst other things.
Please feel free to ask us if you have any questions. We hope to hear from you soon and look forward to inviting you in to see the fantastic learning that your children are completing with us!
Thank you for visiting our page.
