Year 6 General Information
Daily reading is expected from each pupil and will be checked each morning so that new books can be issued. We hope to promote a love of reading and help the children to become more confident readers. We run the Buster Book Club system within the school and the children have the chance to earn rewards for the more times that they read.
Homework books have been issued to each child and homework will be stuck in and given out each Friday. The homework will consist of spellings to learn and one other piece of either maths, English or topic.
Year 6 children are expected to have a PE kit in school at all times. However, our PE days are Monday and Tuesday. PE is part of the curriculum and all children will be expected to participate to extend their skills and enjoyment.
Terms 3 and 4
For the next 2 terms we will be drawing our inspiration from J K Rowling and the book Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In literacy we will will be writing portal stories using Hermione's time-turner along with recounts and newspaper articles based around our trip to the Warner Bros Studio.
In our computing lessons we will be exploring the use of green screens and photo editing. This will then be used to explore how trustworthy some pictures are and how easily pictures in the media can be manipulated.
During our history, we shall be exploring the topic of slavery and the slave trade. Dobby the house elf will be used to demonstrate this sensitive but important topic.
In our maths lessons our big focus will be %. Finding % of amounts and looking at how fractions, decimals and % are similar or equivalent. Please see the video below of an ex pupil explaining his method for calculating % of amounts.
Your child will be bringing home a completed arithmetic paper each week; for their homework we ask children to practice a question or a group of questions. Each week we will aim for pupils to beat their previous score.
