Mrs Taylor and I are very excited about the year ahead and can't wait to welcome Leeds class to year 2. Keep up to date with homework, learning letters and all the exciting learning that takes place.

Term 6

Sports Day

On Thursday the children showed contribution by joining in with sports day and cheering on their house. We all had a fantastic afternoon and would like to thank all the parents who came to join us.

Literacy

 

This week the children were introduced to the text type of persuasion.

They started the week by completing their cold write, persuading Mr Manclark to buy IPad’s for each child to use in lessons. Then they learnt a persuasion text about The Lion King. 

Maths

 

This week the children have been exploring volume and capacity. They have used a range of equipment to measure millimetres and litres. They were then able to read and record their own findings.  

Topic

 

This week the children have been designing and making their own boat. They each used their won materials to create a boat that will float. After making they were then given the chance to test their boat.

Izaac

 

Izaac has just joined us at Drapers Mills and is settling in well. He has been working hard and has made lots of friends.

Take One – World Cup Day

 

On Monday we were all celebrating the start of the world cup. Each class were given a different country, ours was Australia.  The children learnt about the different parts on the Australian flag and then created their own. They then watched part of an Australian football match and waved their flags while cheering them on. Then we had a competition on who can design the best football kit and got one of our sports coaches Mr Smith to pick the winner.

Literacy

 

This week the children have been inventing their own wishing story.  They followed a template to help them plan the structure of a wishing story and then later on in the week completed their hot write.

Maths

 

This week the children have been exploring weight. They have been measuring different items found around the classroom in grams and kilograms. The children learnt that there are 1000g in 1 kilogram which helped them to compare different weights.

Topic

 

In science and design technology the children will be planning and making a boat over the next week. To start off their learning we wanted them to identify materials that float and sink, so they tested a range of materials in water and we recorded the results as a class. Then the children moved their learning onto looking at the different purposes for boats.

Reading

 

Well done to Oliver and Emma this week who have achieved their 150 reads. Fantastic work, keep up the great reading!

Oliver

 

Oliver has really impressed us all in literacy through his ability to act upon personal feedback. He has made lots of progress and is a good role model to others. Well done Oliver. 

 

 

Literacy 

 

This week the children have been innovating the text 'Lila and the Secret of the Rain'. Our new text is called 'Lila and the Secret of the Sun'. The children changed the setting in the story from Africa to Greenland then changed the weather featured in the text. 

They have all been working hard to remember all the key elements in their writing and focusing on improving their handwriting. 

Maths 

 

This week the children have shown endeavour while learning about the column method.

They have been able to solve more complex calculations using hundreds, tens and ones. 

Topic

 

In topic the children have completed an investigation this week answering the question;

 

Does the water change the colour of the flower?

 

The children started off by predicting what would happen to the flowers. Mostly all the children said the flowers would not change or die. Then the children completed the experiment and were amazed at the results. 

Reading

 

Well done to Benjamin for achieving his 150 reads!

I am so proud of my class this week, they have all worked really hard to read each night and we won the Buster's Book award!

Classroom

 

This term we are exploring Africa and are focusing on the text ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’.

The classroom has been decorated with pages from the story book.

Literacy

 

This week the children have been introduced to a wishing tale. We had great class discussions on wishes and what they would wish for and how it can come true.

The children have orally learnt their new text this week and completed actions to help them remember it.

Hook day

 

To start off the topic of ‘Lila and the secret of rain’ we created various weather science experiments. To start as a class we made a rainbow out of plastic cups, food colouring and tissue. This was very effective and the children loved seeing the colours absorb into the tissue and mix creating the colours of a rainbow.  Next the children all had chance to make their own rain using plastic cups water and shaving foam, then created a tornado in groups.

Maths

 

In maths the children have been introduced to arrays. They have used their skills of multiplication to create arrays. The have learnt about the commutative law and have shown this through arrays.

Topic

 

In Geography the children have been exploring Africa. They have looked at the continent itself and its location on a globe. They have compared the African climate to our UK climate and identified where the equator line sits on a globe. They then explored traditional African dress, an African dance and made African jewellery.

The Whole of Year 2

 

For all their hard work during SATs, they have showed enormous amounts of endeavour and have made all of us teachers very proud!

Literacy

 

This week the children have invented a new story. They used a story mountain to plan the structure of their stories and then created a text map for them to follow while writing.

Maths

 

This week the children have had to apply all their knowledge learnt over the last year to complete a range of maths problems and puzzles.

Topic

 

This week the children have been learning how to create different sounds through a range of instruments. They had to work in groups to create a sound of an animal and then the rest of the class had to guess what animal sound they were creating.

Reading

 

We have had lots of children receiving awards this week for their amazing reading.

 It is very important to read every day!

The Royal Wedding

 

Today we celebrated the royal wedding by having a class party and activities afternoon. The children all created their own crowns, had a competition of the best decorated cake and learnt all about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

Literacy

 

This week the children have been learning the new text, tale of fear. This week we created the text map as a class and learnt the text by orally retelling. Then the children had a drama day where they were given the text map in pieces and they had to put it back together in the correct order.

Maths

 

At the start of the week the children were recapping on time. They were able to read quarter past, quarter to and read the clock showing 5 minute intervals.

Later on in the week the children recapped on read scales. They were able to read the scales showing different intervals and could identify the temperature on the thermometer when not all scales are given.

Topic

 

This week the children have had DT and have been designing and making their own puppets. Then the children worked in groups to perform their own puppet show to the class.

Maths

 

This week the children have been working hard in completing their maths SATs and we are very proud of all the effort they are putting in.

On Friday the children focused their attention to directional language. They had to direct a peer around the classroom using the key vocabulary; clockwise, anticlockwise, quarter turn and half turn. They had lots of fun and recognised the importance of giving clear instructions.

Literacy 

 

This week the children planned and wrote a recount of our trip to the zoo. They used a park map to help them to structure their writing, planning the route around the park. They used pictures from the trip to help remind them of the trip and the various animals we saw.

 

Hook Day 

 

On Friday the children were introduced to our new story type, tale of fear. To start off the traditional tale topic we set the children the task of making a house for one of the three little pigs. They were only allowed to use tin foil, pipe cleaners and art straws.

Wingham Wildlife Park

The children had a great time at Wingham and saw lots of different animals. All the children were well behaved and enjoyed the dinosaurs and the play area.

Topic 

 

In science the children have been learning about the different parts of a plant and what they need to survive.  This week they planted cress and are going observe the growth of the plant over the next week.

Literacy

 

This week the children have been introduced to the traditional tale of Hansel and Gretel. The non-fiction text they are learning is a recount. As a class we have all orally learnt the text reinforcing with actions and then created a toolkit so the children are aware of the features of this text type.

Maths

 

This week the children have been recapping on the four operations in preparation for SATs. The children have completed calculations and word problems using all the operations. They have also learnt how to check their answers by using the inverse operation.

Topic

 

This week in History the children have been reflecting on school in the past. They had the opportunity to explore pictures of drapers Mills from the past and compare it to what they see now. The classroom was set up like an old fashioned classroom sitting in rows facing the front. 

Reading

 

Please make sure your children read each evening as this has an impact on their learning. Our focus this term is the children’s understanding of the text. When you have listened to them read, ask them a couple of the questions below to check their understanding of the text.

Literacy

 

This week the children have been watching parts of Zathura and then written about what they have watched so far using key skills from their toolkits.

Maths

 

In maths this week we have been looking at measurement. The children have been learning the units of measure and been able to estimate, order and compare different lengths. They have learnt how to measure using different resources, such as a metre stick, ruler and trundle wheel.

They were set a task to measure the heights of the different children and the order them from tallest to shortest and compare the heights using the correct terminology.

Topic

 

This week in DT the children have been designing and making musical instruments. At the start of the week the children explored how different instruments make their sounds. Then they designed two different instruments and had to pick one design and explain how they would make it. After this it was making time!

This week the children have been working hard to plan and write their own journey story. They all picked the horror genre and were able to include elements from their toolkit.

 

 

Hook Day

The children were introduced to our new non-fiction explanation text on Friday and were able given the opportunity to have fun and play lots of different games.

Maths

 

This week the children have continued looking at fractions, exploring unit and non-unit fractions.

They have been able to use their reasoning skills to explain how they achieved the answer.

Topic

 

National Science Week 2018!

 

This week the children have designed, created and tested rockets. They learnt how the rockets fly and could evaluate their designs, suggesting possible improvements next time.

Reading

 

Well done I have had several children this week achieving 100 reads.

Fantastic work everyone!

Treat

The children made fruit skewers on Friday afternoon.

They all enjoyed the healthy snack and were able to try a range of different fruits.

This week in literacy the children have been planning their own horror journey story. They explored a range of horror settings and characters.

In maths this week the children have been looking at fractions. They have been able to find a half and a quarter of a shape and number. 

Topic

 

The children have been learning about Christopher Columbus and his voyage of discovery. They were then able to compare the journey/discovery of Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong.

This week in Literacy we have been learning our new journey text called Alien School.

The children learnt the text by orally retelling it using actions and drama.

Hook Day

The children had to follow riddles around the school to find and collect all the aliens.

Maths

 

At the start of the week the children completed two practice SATs papers.

This allowed the children to become familiar with the layout and style of the paper ready for the real SATs.

All the children work really hard applying everything we have taught them so far.

 

Towards the end of the week the children were looking at estimation. The children were taught the estimation is an educated prediction.

Topic

 

This week in Science the children have been learning about materials. They took part in a material hunt around the school and then were able to categorise them according to their properties.

Later on in the week in computing the children made a PowerPoint presentation based on their chosen material and then presented it to the rest of the class.

This week in maths the children have been identifying 3D shapes, looking at their faces, edges and vertices.

This week’s topic is music. The children have explored the texture of the music by using a range of instruments.

This week the children have been introduced to our new discussion text, ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. The children have been learning the features of a discussion text and learnt the new text through actions.

Maths

This week the children have been exploring 2D shapes. They have identified the properties of a 2D shape and been able to sort 2D shapes according to their properties.

Topic

This week the children spent each lesson exploring different continents. They were able to travel between the classrooms collecting information for their fact files they were creating.

This week the children have written their own portal stories and did an amazing job!

In maths the children have been learning about block diagrams, they collect their own data and display it as a block diagram.

Topic

This week in Topic the children planned their own sandwich, making sure it followed a balanced diet. They learnt the food groups and where their ingredients came from.

Then on Thursday they were able to make their own sandwiches.

This week the children saw the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk.

They all had a brilliant time and the children left with big smiles.

Literacy

 

This week the children learnt a new story called Superkid.

We used props to act out the story. Then the children were able to adapt the story and write their own innovated version.

Maths

 

This week the children created a pictogram. On Thursday the children completed their own maths investigation where they had the opportunity to choose how to display their own data by using and applying the skills learnt so far.

This week’s superstar is…

Kieran

For his endeavour to read at home and improved behaviour.

Literacy

 

This week the children had to use their imagination to complete a cold write of a portal story, selecting a character and a portal they would travel through.

 

The children also took part in our hook day, where they were surprised by the year 2 staff dressed in superhero costumes. The children then spent the morning making their own superhero mask.

Over the term the children will be looking at rhyming words and applying these skills within their portal story.

Maths

 

We have started the term by looking at statistics. This week the children have created their own tally chart and pictogram. They have learnt the features of these charts, how to construct and how to interpret the data shown. One of the tasks this week was to construct and collect data based on the children’s favourite superhero.

Topic

 

The children have been focusing on exercise and what our bodies need to stay healthy.

 

In P.E. we asked the question: Do tall children run faster than shorter children?

 

The children then completed the investigation by doing the beep test. The results showed that height does not mean you are a faster runner.

This week the children have been inventing their own instructions on how to catch their character. Within my set we have had a range of characters from mermaids to skeletons. The children planned their instructions and then completed a hot write.

Maths

 

In maths the children have been exploring doubling and halving. They have used concrete and written methods.  The children were able to link their knowledge of dividing and multiplying by 2 to their halving and doubling lessons.

 

The focus has been on the children being able to explain their reasoning. This is a very important skill they will need for future maths skills.

In literacy this week the children have been creating instructions on how to catch a Christmas character. The children have planned and described traps that they would use to catch their characters.

Maths

 

This week the children have been introduced to division. They started off the week by sharing objects equally between groups of 2, 3, 5 and 10’s. The children were then able to draw their jottings and complete division word problems.

This week some of the children decorated the classroom.

We have a class advent calendar and each day a child’s name will be picked and they will receive the chocolate treat for the day.
