The Shooting Stars learnt about the Romans and found out that around 2000 years ago they came to Margate and left some things behind. Can you believe it?! The children were lucky enough to go and see the grounds where the Romans had once been. Drapers Mills was built on top of a Roman town! Look what we found in the pond area!

We also had playtime there and played 'Duck, duck, goose!'

Children:

Can you remember what a typical Roman house looked like? What were the pillars called? Did the Romans have a television, radio, microwave or computer? Why?

Watch this video to find out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDiqKUzSeZM

In Maths, the older children continued to work on adding and taking away multiples of 10 with a hundred square at times and also without for certain activities. They also tried to estimate where a number would be on a blank hundred square.

The younger children practised counting up and down to/from 20 and recognising mistakes when counting. They also practised adding to 5 by combining sets of objects. They worked on using symbols like ‘+’ and ‘=’ in everyday problems as well as recognising small amounts without counting each object.

Important information:  Remember, our classroom doors will be open from 8.30 for early learning. Please remember to make sure your children have their coats every day and to bring their packed lunches if they don't have school dinners.

Have a good weekend and let's hope this sun lasts!

Hello parents, carers and children!

Our Shooting Stars this week are:  Matus, Sebi, Andrea, Patrik, Sofie and Jozef, Dominik, Flavius and Sebastian. We are also pleased to welcome our two new arrivals: Matias and Jacopo! They speak Italian! Children: why don't you say 'Buongiorno' ('Hello' in Italian) to them? nofrown

In Phonics, the older children have been learning ‘ai’, ‘ee’ ‘oo’ and ‘oa’. The younger children have worked on blending various sounds such as ‘p’,’I’,’n’,’t’,’a’,’e’,’g’.

This week, in Literacy we have been learning to name and identify classroom stationery, like: pen, pencil, rubber, ruler, book, sharpener, scissors, glue (stick), cello tape, etc.

We also had a tour around the school and identified where the toilet, hall, library, head teacher’s office, office, ICT suite and so on were as well as what they look like.

Children: can you name the different items in this pencil case?

Do you have any of these things in your pencil case?

This Thursday was also 'World Book Day' so we talked about what types of books there are and which we like. We also studied the book 'Something wonderful' and wrote about what we could see and what we thought each character would say.

We also interpreted data from this by asking each member of the class which type of stories they prefer. Miss Lamb likes fairy tales and Mrs Urban's favourite are horror stories. What is yours?

In Maths, this week the children have learnt to use a hundred square to count forwards and back in tens. Younger children learnt how to group different amounts up to 6 and how to put them together. They focussed on what ‘all together’ means as well as other Maths vocabulary.

Challenge for children:                                                                                                                 Complete the sequence.

How many pencils are there all together?

On Friday, we also discussed the fact it is Mother's Day on Sunday 6th March! The children had a lovely time making and writing cards. Take a look our our pictures!

Mums: we hope you like your cards and have a nice Mother's day! <3

Children: why don't you sing this song to your mum?

The people in China celebrate in many different ways including getting together with their families, eating special food and having big parties in the street. Doesn’t that sound lovely!

Watch this video to find out more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u-R-aIq3_E

Today is also a special day at Drapers Mills because it is 'Take One Artist' day. The children have learnt about a famous Dutch painter called Vincent Van Gogh. Why not watch this video if you're sure who he is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lGEvm1Lve0 The children really enjoyed finding out about Van Gogh's life and about his painting.

Can you guess what we did next? That's right, we created our own version of this painting called 'Starry night'.

First, we looked at the painting and decided what colours to use. Which ones can you see? Next, we put our aprons on and got ready for some fun painting! We used paintbrushes on foil to make the background of our paintingand then used our fingers to add more detail. The children loved this activity! We also added lots of glitter to make each piece of artwork sparkly smiley! What do you think of our work? We hope you like it!

The children have been practising words containing these sounds through songs and fun activities!

Please help them complete their homework and return it to us on Monday 2/11/15.

In our language lessons, we learnt about fruits, such as lemon, pineapple, banana, strawberry, orange, watermelon, apple and grapes.

To practise these words, sing along to this song with your children smiley

We were also lucky enough to have some Year 6 come in to read us some of their amazing stories.

That's all for this week but we hope you have a lovely Half term break and plenty of rest!

Don't forget there is NO school from 26/10/15- 1/11/15.
