Mrs Taylor and I are very excited about the year ahead and can't wait to welcome Leeds class to year 2. Keep up to date with homework, learning letters and all the exciting learning that takes place.

In literacy the children have been inventing their own stories. The children gathered ideas for their writing through setting and character description then created their own best maps.  All the children have produced amazing stories this week!

Maths

 

This week the children have been learning about money. The children started by finding the totals of coins using their knowledge of pence, pounds and notes. They were able to find different ways to find the totals.

Topic

 

The children have been designing and making door signs in Design Technology. The children enjoyed getting messy with salt dough when creating their letters for their sign.

Some children have received their 9th bead this week which means they are so close to achieving a red ted.

Children in Need

 

Thank you to all the children for dressing up and paying £1 towards the amazing charity, children in need. We all had a fun day meeting Pudsey bear and eating lots of cakes and the cake sale.

Some children have changed the setting and others have added in a new character.

This week we have been focusing on the operations addition and subtraction. The children have used inverse to solve missing number problems.

This week the children have been introduced to our new story...

As a class we have created a best map to help them retain the story. We have been exploring the vocabulary used within the text and created actions to help the children remember the sequence of the story.

Hook Day!

 

To hook the children into their learning, we created dragons out of clay. The children were able to identify the features of a dragon and used adjectives to describe them.

Maths

 

At the start of the week the children were looking at addition and subtraction word problems. Then we moved onto missing number problems and the children used their jottings to help solve them.

Topic

 

In geography this week the children have been looking at the differences and similarities between coasts and towns. Then they furthered their comparisons by looking at pictures of Margate in the past and compared it to the present.

This week the children took part in the game show who wants to be a millionaire. All the questions were based on what the children have been learning throughout this term. The children had lots of fun working in partners to answer the questions.

This week the children planned using the boxing up method and created a text map to help them write a non-chronological report.

This week the children have been learning the cup song. They have been making music from objects found around the classroom. The children have adapted using cotton wool or rice to change the sound produced by the cup.

This week the children have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes. Some children have taken part in a shape hunt around the school. Later on in the week they took their learning to the next level by discussing the similarities and differences.

Design Technology 

 

In DT we have used folding techniques to make a Pterodactyl that could flap it's wings. Last week the children explored using paper to make the dinosaur and this week we have made it out of card. The children were able to compared the two materials and explain what material they preferred to use and why.

European Languages Day!

 

On Tuesday the whole of year 2 studied Italy. We learnt how to say numbers to 10 in Italian and tasted traditional Italian food, PIZZA! The children got to listen to some traditional Italian songs and we explored different cities within Italy.

The children have been exploring movement and had the opportunity to use a range of materials to make their own dinosaur. They used different folding techniques to create a 3D dinosaur.

This week the children have impressed us with their creativity in writing.

As a class we have innovated part of the story. We have chosen to change the villain from the Pirate T-Rex to a mad Professor. The children were able to think of adjectives to describe the villain and showed understanding  of the role of the villain in a story.

This week we have celebrated Roald Dahl Day. 

I would like to say thank you very much to all of our parents that dressed their children in amazing costumes. They all looked great!

Our day consisted of reading parts of the book 'The Twits' and exploring the foods which were in Mr Twits beard. The children described how the food smelt, felt and even tasted!

Important Information:

 

The head teacher will be sending a news letter out this Friday which will have information of upcoming events and dates for the diary. 

 

We will also be sending home spellings and a counting in 2's activity sheet for the children to complete. 

All homework will be placed in a new purple homework book. This is to be completed and then returned by Wednesday. It is very important that children continue their learning at home. 

 

Inside your child's homework book will be their log in for education city where they can access more homework online from home.

Important Information:

 

PE days - Wednesday and Tuesday

All children need a PE kit in school. 

 

Year group learning letters are going home with the children on Friday as well as spellings to practice and a timetable sheet. All homework is to be returned by the following Wednesday.
