This week the children have been introduced to the traditional tale of Hansel and Gretel. The non-fiction text they are learning is a recount. As a class we have all orally learnt the text reinforcing with actions and then created a toolkit so the children are aware of the features of this text type.

Maths

 

This week the children have been recapping on the four operations in preparation for SATs. The children have completed calculations and word problems using all the operations. They have also learnt how to check their answers by using the inverse operation.

This week in History the children have been reflecting on school in the past. They had the opportunity to explore pictures of drapers Mills from the past and compare it to what they see now. The classroom was set up like an old fashioned classroom sitting in rows facing the front.

This week the children have been watching parts of Zathura and then written about what they have watched so far using key skills from their toolkits.

In maths this week we have been looking at measurement. The children have been learning the units of measure and been able to estimate, order and compare different lengths. They have learnt how to measure using different resources, such as a metre stick, ruler and trundle wheel.

They were set a task to measure the heights of the different children and the order them from tallest to shortest and compare the heights using the correct terminology.

Topic

 

This week in DT the children have been designing and making musical instruments. At the start of the week the children explored how different instruments make their sounds. Then they designed two different instruments and had to pick one design and explain how they would make it. After this it was making time!

This week the children have designed, created and tested rockets. They learnt how the rockets fly and could evaluate their designs, suggesting possible improvements next time.

This allowed the children to become familiar with the layout and style of the paper ready for the real SATs.

All the children work really hard applying everything we have taught them so far.

This week the children saw the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk.

They all had a brilliant time and the children left with big smiles.

This week the children had to use their imagination to complete a cold write of a portal story, selecting a character and a portal they would travel through.

 

The children also took part in our hook day, where they were surprised by the year 2 staff dressed in superhero costumes. The children then spent the morning making their own superhero mask.

We have started the term by looking at statistics. This week the children have created their own tally chart and pictogram. They have learnt the features of these charts, how to construct and how to interpret the data shown. One of the tasks this week was to construct and collect data based on the children’s favourite superhero.

The children have been focusing on exercise and what our bodies need to stay healthy.

 

In P.E. we asked the question: Do tall children run faster than shorter children?

 

The children then completed the investigation by doing the beep test. The results showed that height does not mean you are a faster runner.

This week the children have been inventing their own instructions on how to catch their character. Within my set we have had a range of characters from mermaids to skeletons. The children planned their instructions and then completed a hot write.

Maths

 

In maths the children have been exploring doubling and halving. They have used concrete and written methods.  The children were able to link their knowledge of dividing and multiplying by 2 to their halving and doubling lessons.

 

The focus has been on the children being able to explain their reasoning. This is a very important skill they will need for future maths skills.

In DT we have used folding techniques to make a Pterodactyl that could flap it's wings. Last week the children explored using paper to make the dinosaur and this week we have made it out of card. The children were able to compared the two materials and explain what material they preferred to use and why.

European Languages Day!

 

On Tuesday the whole of year 2 studied Italy. We learnt how to say numbers to 10 in Italian and tasted traditional Italian food, PIZZA! The children got to listen to some traditional Italian songs and we explored different cities within Italy.

As a class we have innovated part of the story. We have chosen to change the villain from the Pirate T-Rex to a mad Professor. The children were able to think of adjectives to describe the villain and showed understanding  of the role of the villain in a story.

This week we have celebrated Roald Dahl Day. 

I would like to say thank you very much to all of our parents that dressed their children in amazing costumes. They all looked great!

Our day consisted of reading parts of the book 'The Twits' and exploring the foods which were in Mr Twits beard. The children described how the food smelt, felt and even tasted!

Important Information:

 

The head teacher will be sending a news letter out this Friday which will have information of upcoming events and dates for the diary. 

 

We will also be sending home spellings and a counting in 2's activity sheet for the children to complete. 

All homework will be placed in a new purple homework book. This is to be completed and then returned by Wednesday. It is very important that children continue their learning at home. 

 

Inside your child's homework book will be their log in for education city where they can access more homework online from home.

Maths

 

This week in maths we have kicked off the learning with place value. The children used deines blocks to help them partition numbers into tens and ones.

Riley has come back to school with a positive attitude and has demonstrated all the school values.

 

Important Information:

 

PE days - Wednesday and Tuesday

All children need a PE kit in school. 

 

Year group learning letters are going home with the children on Friday as well as spellings to practice and a timetable sheet. All homework is to be returned by the following Wednesday.

Reading is a very important part of education and supports learning across all subjects. 

Please take time to read with your children each evening.
