Art and Design

Art in school

Art is taught as a stand alone subject but is also widely used to broaden other areas of the curriculum. We hold yearly Art days where the children get to participate in several creative activities with different year groups and classes on a rota basis. This is an opportunity to develop different art techniques and learn about a variety of artists. We are continuing to build strong links with the Turner Centre and have recently visited and exhibited there! Trips to local galleries, spaces and exhibitions encourage community engagement. Local artists are often invited into school to help further our creative skills and give us a greater understanding of the art world beyond the classroom. Our gifted and talented artists are given specialist opportunities to enhance their work further, through trips, community work and curation.

Bath Class @ ClaySpace Studios

Year 6, Bath class enjoyed getting their hands messy during a trip to ClaySpace Studios, Cliftonville. The children worked alongside artists Bridget and Sarah to sculpt baby dragons hatching out of eggs. The trip was to further enrich their learning of their current Vikings topic, with inspiration drawn from the book 'How to Train your Dragon'. We very much look forward to sharing their finished creations, once the clay has been fired and painted!

Draper's Mill's pupils celebrate artistic success at the end of the academic year. 
Five schools competed against each other in the '
Neal Foundation' competition. Drapers scooped a joint first position with judges commending the school's bright, crisp presentation style and fascinating work, with corners and window sills hosting 3D models, an interactive game and table top displays.
This year's focus was
art in geography
Judges assessed the exhibitions on the children's ability to demonstrate geographical knowledge, using a variety of art techniques and media.
The school's
gifted and talented artist's presented the exhibition to the judges.
Paper cutting, clay sculptures, felt making, screen printing and collagraphy were all explored by pupils in years 1-6. 
The judges final reported commented that
"there was an air of understated pride and confidence about this exhibition - a legacy that is going to filter through into the coming year."

Jayden wins the Turner Contemporary's Art Portfolio KS2 Prize!

Wow! Congratulations to Jayden for winning the Key Stage 2 Turner Centre Portfolio Art award at Canterbury Christ Church University. 

With well over 1000 entries from across Kent and Medway to complete against, Jayden came out on top to scoop up the top prize of overall winner of the KS2 Turner Contempary Portfolio Art Competition.

Jayden, from Year 4 Roehampton class, created a multi layered piece of artwork titled 'Concrete Jungle'. His main aim was to highlight the issue of the disappearance of forests and greenspaces and inspire us all to make a change by growing more trees instead of building more towns and cities.

Well done also to Jovita for being an amazing runner up!

Printing artists Fiona and Jayne visit year 4 to design and create screen-prints of Dreamland and Margate based on their current topic, the 1980s. Every child in year 4 sketch images and logos taken from Margate in the 1980s. These images were then cut into stencils and attached to frames. The children were then invited to choose a mixture of colours to pull through the screens using a 'squigey' to create amazingly colourful screen-prints!

We worked onto both plain and tissue paper collaged A1 paper... lots of mess and fun was had by all involved!

Our artwork is going to be exhibited in the main school corridoor as part of our competition work for The Neal Foundation.

School council will be arranging the exhibition and sale of some exclusive editions of our prints, which we are hoping to have on show to the local community... watch this space!!!

Year 3 fully embracing their new topic by creating their own volcano inspired felt paintings, with stitch detail. First, we listened to volcano music and made drawings from our imaginations. Next, we chose hot colours from the wool on offer, and began layering one colour to form a base. We then added more layers in different colours and tones, using a variety of details such as rolling felt balls, plaiting the wool and cutting it into different shapes and sizes.
The final part of the felting process involved washing the wool in warm soapy water and rubbing it to create friction, which in turn, attached the wool fibres together which creates felt!
Once the felt had dried, we were then able to begin stitching a variety of colours into it to add detail and areas of interest.
Our artistic inspiration was drawn from the contemporary felting artist, Scottish born, Moy Mackay.

Key Stage 1 and Art

During Key Stage 1 the children begin to discover and learn about Art from different times and cultures. After a creatively independent start in Foundation Stage the children show more confidence in expressing their artistic ideas. Through experimenting and exploration of different textures and media the children begin to learn how to apply different Art processes. 

 

Key Stage 2 and Art

During Key Stage 2 the children begin to consolidate their previous artistic techniques showing more confidence in planning and executing work. Art starts to have stronger links with other subjects having more purpose. In Year 6 the classes spend the last term looking closely at the work of artists and creating their own artistic compositions.

 

Visits from Art specialists

It is important for children to experience Art in different forms. We encourage visits from specialists and run workshops to widen their skills and appreciation of different art forms.
